I’m Sunny, by the way, Sunny Melo. I’m twenty-six-years-old, and a five-year transplant out of Colorado Springs. Most people think I’m local. That’s because, I’m five-ten with brown hair, brown eyes, tan, and surf whenever I can. My old man, Henrique Melo, was stationed at Schofield Barracks back in the early ’80s then moved to Honolulu twenty years ago after divorcing my mom.
I have to say being on the water is like nothing else. It’s peaceful out here. There is rhythm to the ocean, its currents, its moods. I can tell how my whole day is going to be just by the waves. Once it gets into your blood, you can sense it back on land, miles away. Sometimes in the office, I can feel the pull and the push of the surf.
My office is just a couple blocks on the right, at Kapahulu Street, directly across from Ala Wai Driving Range. A store front window reads: MELO INVESTIGATIONS. DANNY MELO, ATTORNEY AT LAW.
Officially, I am just a paralegal, while I figure out what I want to do with my life. I thought I wanted to get my law degree. When I told Danny that, he said, “Why would you want to go and do that—don’t you see how it screwed my life up?”
//The above are excerpts from my new novel. Murder is Best Served Cold – When two key employees of a Hawaii startup are accidentally poisoned after eating blowfish, the daughter of the sushi chef hires Sunny to investigate their deaths after her father’s suicide. Sunny discovers a twisted plot of love, greed and murder that is best served cold.
The Accidental Detective Series – a surfer at heart, Sunny Melo is Honolulu paralegal at his brother’s firm, Melo Investigations, where he fills in for his absent brother and takes on the crime solving role as private investigator.
